This course combines classroom and practical sessions. Those attending will gain an insight into the principles and operation of key electromedical equipment employed in theatres whilst facilitating them to become confident in determining performance verification. Coupled with practical sessions that will allow individual practice with surgical diathermy, theatre plinths, lighting, and specialist test equipment within a safe environment.

The course is ideally suited for clinical/medical engineers who wish to expand their knowledge of the principles of operation of theatre equipment as part of continuous professional development.

Course Aim

To provide participants with a good understanding of the principles of theatre equipment, its applications and maintenance procedures.

Course Objectives

  • Explain Infection Prevention and Control and the principles of electrical safety testing
  • Describe the principles of operation and hazards of surgical diathermy and surgical plumes
  • Describe the principle of operation of surgical tables
  • Explain the theory of LED technology and the key parameters for ensuring effective surgical illumination
  • Perform electrical safety and performance testing on surgical diathermy, tables and lighting using specialist tools and test equipment
