To provide participants with a good understanding of the principles of theatre equipment, its applications and maintenance procedures.

Who is the course for

The course is ideally suited for those with basic knowledge in biomedical engineering and hospital operating theatre equipment. This course is designed to bridge the gaps that often occur between academic knowledge and skills with the requirements of the actual work place. Learners will gain a good grasp of the physiology related to theatre equipment. This will enable them to be confident and fully understand the principles of operation of surgical tables, surgical lighting, and surgical equipment in an operating theatre. The course will enable learners to perform all the required maintenance, safety testing and performance testing of equipment used in an operating theatre.

This course is aimed at new entrants and existing technical staff to the healthcare sector who are involved in maintaining theatre related equipment.

BY THE END OF THE COURSE YOU WILL BE ABLE TO:

– Explain Infection Prevention and Control and the principles of electrical safety testing

– Describe the principles of operation and hazards of surgical diathermy and surgical plumes

– Describe the principle of operation of surgical tables

– Explain the theory of LED technology and the key parameters for ensuring effective surgical illumination

– Perform electrical safety and performance testing on surgical diathermy, tables and lighting using specialist tools and test equipment
