Our introduction to healthcare engineering, estates and facilities course, also known as ‘Summer School’, will provide learners with a broad introduction to a wide range of engineering disciplines operating within a medical/healthcare environment.

Who is the course for

This course is suitable for individuals who may be new to healthcare engineering, apprentices, or anyone wanting to gain an understanding of the different healthcare engineering disciplines.

Aims & objectives

This course will provide learners with a broad introduction to a wide range of engineering disciplines operating within a medical/healthcare environment. Learners will gain a greater understanding of how the services they provide impacts on compliance to various HTMs and will be relevant to electrical and mechanical engineers.

Learning outcomes

To provide an understanding of the requirements of engineering disciplines and regulations written on healthcare setting.

Learners will benefit from a stimulating mix of theory and practical learning covering:

  • – Electrical installations in a healthcare environment – an overview, including electrical safety & HTM’s
  • – Medical gas safety – an introduction to the medical gas pipeline system, practical cylinder change and daily checks
  • – Electrical safety testing for medical equipment
  • – The purpose of ventilation and critical ventilation systems in healthcare
  • – Lifts – an understanding of the types of lifts, and the regulations and legislation relating to them
  • – Water hygiene – fundamental knowledge of water hygiene including Legionella management
  • – Decontamination & sterilization equipment – an overview of decontamination engineering support

How the course is assessed

Learners will be informally assessed throughout the week. On the Friday, a formal, open book assessment will test the engineering disciplines covered.
