This course goes beyond traditional Legionella Competent Person training, also covering the physical, chemical and microbiological risks associated with water distribution systems within building premises, and the role of the individual in providing safe water systems.
ACoP L8 and HSG 274 parts 1, 2 and 3 requires individuals appointed to devise strategies, develop procedures, carry out control measures and undertake associated maintenance and monitoring must receive adequate training.
It is essential that technicians and operational staff have an overall appreciation of the practices affecting water hygiene and safety and can interpret guidance and perform their tasks in a safe and technically competent manner.

This course is for technicians and operational staff who operate, maintain, monitor and repair water distribution systems and associated equipment. They will have specific roles and responsibilities for water systems in building premises under contractual arrangements, that require an in- depth understanding of water hygiene and safety.

To learn how to apply these whilst undertaking their roles and responsibilities to protect user safety from the microbiological, chemical and physical risks associated with water systems in healthcare facilities.
BY THE END OF THE COURSE YOU WILL BE ABLE TO:
– State the requirements of legislation and regulations for water distribution systems.
– Describe the prominent waterborne pathogens – occurrence, ecology and transmission routes and the consequence of contamination of the water systems from these. Consider other water safety issues including chemical and physical contamination.
– Explain the ways in which water distribution systems, cooling towers, outlets, components and associated equipment can become contaminated and methods of preventing contamination.
– Describe the responsibilities of individuals to prevent contamination of the water distribution system and outlets and assist in ensuring control measures in place are effective. Identify appropriate personal hygiene, cleanliness of equipment, tools, materials and storage.
– Discuss methods of sampling and appropriate aseptic techniques.
– Discuss risk assessment, maintenance of log books and records in relation to compliance with regulations identify the elements of a suitable and sufficient risk assessment, risk minimisation scheme and action plan.
– Understand the function, role and responsibilities of the ‘Duty Holder’ and ‘Responsible Person’ (ACoP L8).
The Legionella Awareness for Technicians course provides practical training for technicians and operational staff responsible for operating, maintaining, monitoring and repairing water distribution systems.
It covers the causes of Legionella, legal responsibilities, water hygiene risks and the practical measures technicians can take to help maintain safe water systems in line with ACoP L8 and HSG 274 Parts 1, 2 and 3.
The course explains the legislation and guidance that supports the management of water hygiene risks, including ACoP L8, HSG 274 Parts 1, 2 and 3 and other relevant statutory requirements. Learners gain an understanding of how this guidance applies to the maintenance and operation of building water systems.
You’ll learn how Legionella bacteria develop and spread, the risks associated with contaminated water systems, the principles of water hygiene, methods of preventing contamination, safe maintenance practices, sampling techniques, record keeping and the role technicians play in maintaining compliant water systems.
Technicians play a vital role in preventing contamination within water systems. Understanding how maintenance activities, flushing regimes, inspections and repairs affect water hygiene helps reduce the risk of Legionella growth and supports compliance with legal requirements while protecting building users.
Yes. The course introduces water sampling methods, appropriate aseptic techniques and monitoring activities used to support effective water hygiene management. Learners also explore the importance of maintaining accurate records and understanding how monitoring contributes to ongoing compliance.
By the end of the course, you’ll understand the causes of Legionella, identify common contamination risks, apply good water hygiene practices, support monitoring programmes, carry out maintenance safely and understand your responsibilities when working on water distribution systems.
Although legislation does not specify a fixed refresher period, ACoP L8 recommends that individuals with responsibilities for water systems receive regular refresher training. As industry best practice, refresher training is generally undertaken every two to three years, or sooner if guidance or job responsibilities change.
