Case study: Degrees at Eastwood Park, Annie Johnstone

Annie Johnstone, Compliance Officer at Homerton University Hospital NHS Trust

Annie is the Compliance Officer at Homerton University Hospital NHS Trust and currently in her first year with Eastwood Park studying for the Foundation Degree in Hospital Engineering.

After Annie completed her mechanical engineering apprenticeship she felt she wanted a job with more of an opportunity for career development so applied for the position of maintenance technician within the NHS. Since then she has not looked back, working with senior engineers and managers in the day to day operational management of building services, before progressing to Compliance Officer in the Estates Department.

“Once I had started to progress within the NHS, it became clear to me that I needed more training to give me a more rounded overview of management across the disciplines of healthcare engineering. The Eastwood Park degree programme attracted me as it was unique to anything else I had come across; I’d previously started an HNC but quickly realised it was not for me as it was not specifically hospital related.

“The Foundation Degree has been a big undertaking but I’m lucky as Homerton Hospital are really supportive and have given me one study day a week away from work which helps to ease the pressure. Trying to find the time in the evenings and weekends to fit in studying can sometimes be challenging but my partner and family have been very understanding, so that has made it a lot easier.

“I’ve been enjoying the learning not least because we’re always learning something I can put straight into practice when I get back to the workplace. I’ve found that a lot of the assignments so far have been really relevant to my current role and being able to learn at the same time as actually doing the job has been a massive advantage as it puts everything into perspective.”
