The course will be 1.5 days in duration with learners arriving at 5pm, on day one for a group work session and social introduction prior to dinner and networking. The next full day will focus on the points outlined below; drawing upon the exercises from the evening before. Learners will acquire a clear understanding of the principles of energy and sustainability management, helping them to deliver effective programmes of work and significant efficiency savings.

This course is aimed at Estates Managers, Environmental Managers, Energy Managers, Finance and Asset Managers as well as Capital Project Managers plus Directors with responsibility for PFI contracts and Strategic Managers.

Attendance and completion of this course will provide learners with a unique insight into energy management and sustainability – ensuring that all will leave with an enhanced understanding of current energy management requirements, techniques and technological know how as well as the wider sustainability context around policy development and implementation.


This course will focus on the delivery of improvements within the areas of energy and sustainability management, it will support the outcome and requirements of the Lord Carter review to deliver the changes needed to achieve the efficiency improvements required within the NHS by 2020.

The course will focus on a range of topic areas including: utilities procurement and management, technological efficiency improvements, the development of a Trust SDMP as well as the implementation of a staff behavioural change programme.


By the end of this course learners will be able to:

  • List their achievements, priorities and aspirations relative to energy and sustainability management.
  • Describe the key principles of energy management
  • State the energy procurement options, reporting, monitoring & targeting
  • Describe the energy scheme verification - IPMVP and energy benchmarking process, prioritising areas of focus – The Energy Efficiency programme
  • State the optimisation of building service systems; steam and condensate, HVAC, boilers, refrigeration, lighting and small power, water
  • List the finance and funding options
  • List the supporting documentation for making the application
  • Describe the Building Management System (BMS) 
  • Explain the requirements of a Behavioural Change Programme
  • State the requirements needed to develop and implement a Sustainable Development Management/Action Plan (SDMP/SDAP)
