Case Study | Qatar (English)
Hamad Medical Corporation, Doha, Qatar

Eastwood Park was asked to assist the Hamad Corporation in Qatar with its requirement to establish engineering systems and appoint and develop staff in accordance with International Standards and Codes of Practice in all seven of its hospitals.
- Eastwood Park started by adapting UK hospital codes of practice (HTMs) and a structured approach to maintenance and testing (PPM, CoPs and new ways of working) in all 8 hospitals.
- The systems developed identified clear responsibilities and the required competencies for the maintenance, management and quality assurance of engineering and facility systems, plant and hospital equipment including: medical gases, electrical, water, lifts, air-conditioning, and steam boilers.
- The roles of Competent Person, Authorised Person and Authorising Engineer were adopted (from EU Approved Codes of Practice) and the competencies for these roles informed the training programmes developed by Eastwood Park.
Early indications show that significant service improvements have occurred and that they are now aligned to the hospital group’s quality systems and the overall international hospital accreditation the Hamad Group are seeking. Eastwood Park has subsequently been asked to undertake additional training and consultancy activity in support of other hospital service areas.
Outcomes
Over 300 staff were appointed, trained and accredited with internationally recognised competency qualifications 900 Nurses trained as Designated Nursing Officers (Medical Gases). Engineering systems were audited, redeveloped and redesigned to ensure compliance to international benchmarks of good practice. This prestigious programme was featured on prime time Qatari national television news.

Case Study | KSA (English)
King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre, Riyadh, KSA

Eastwood Park was commissioned to provide training to enable their existing Central Sterilization and Supply Distribution (CSSD) staff to achieve an American theory qualification (CBSPD). Eastwood Park trainers soon realised that this qualification would not address the service issues they had, and so the CSSD development programme was initiated.
Eastwood Park trainers proposed, and later delivered, the following phased CSSD development programme:
- Reviewed and rewrote/updated CSSD policies and procedures
- We designed a training programme for existing CSSD staff, based on these policies and procedures, that would also achieve an American qualification and a competence-based CSSD qualification from the UK. We also trained and qualified existing CSSD supervisors to support and assess their existing and trainee technicians on policies, procedures and CSSD occupational standards of competence.
- We worked with King Faisal hospital to design a diploma programme accredited by the Saudi Commission for Health Specialities. The diploma programme for CSSD Technicians included:
- Functional Skills training (English, ICT. Medical Terminology etc)
- Sterile services and infection control theory training
- On-the-job practical training
- Integrated CSSD work experience
- The American qualification
- The UK competence-based CSSD qualification
12 young Saudi nationals recently graduated with their diplomas and are now working as CSSD technicians at the hospital in Riyadh. The hospital hopes to recruit another group soon.
Outcomes
The programme updated departmental practices and established a skills base and on-going structure to significantly minimise potential issues by implementing competence-based programmes related to internationally recognised standards, practices and qualifications.
